Did anyone of you brainstorm the future aspiration of IMA? I think there are plenty of rooms for further improvement and empowerment. There are lots of professional accounting associations around the world, and how could IMA stand out of the crowd and make us all proud?

I would like the IMA to take the following initiatives from now on:

1. To get the IMA well-known globally among students. We can start from the international students studying in US and make them bare in mind that the IMA is the best management accounting association even after they come back to their home country.

2. To get the IMA recognisable internationally and be a member of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC).

3. To arrange mutual recognition agreement with other international accounting associations.

As a CMA, I strongly urge IMA to take the intiatives, a big step forward to become a well-known accounting association around the global.

Did anyone of you get the same feelings? Feel free to share and discuss. And I hope my aspiration would become true in the near future.

I hope the management of the IMA could read my suggestions.

We are required to submit the original official transcript or notarised copy of the same. I did my graduation from India and the only document I received from my university is the PASS CERTIFICATE and the FINAL CONSOLIDATED MARKLIST. My first question is the PASS CERTIFICATE issued under the university's seal equivalent to the official transcript. Secondly, I had my pass certificate attested from India (mainly required to be attested for visa purposes for getting job visa in the UNITED ARAB EMIRATES). Is this Attestation enough for this purpose , will a photocopy of the originally attested certificate be enough for sending to ICMA. Regard, Rajesh

I am about to wirte my exam on New system CMA Part 1 and would like to know exam pattern is it like Gleim or IMA on line Assessment or nothing like Gleim or IMA on line assassement.

Dear All

Last week I set for my CMA part 1 , exam was very tough very coplex I got oNLY 430 , I do my best with studing and revewing but i failed why i do not knew I practice with IMA Q&A as mock exam I usually got 90 or 95 % but in real exam i couldnot get this result why questions in real exam diffrent than practice . time also not enough to answer all questions

any advice well be high appreciated

I received an email from IMA about a new spreadsheet tool that may be used beginning in May/June testing window. I will be sitting for Part 2 New. I carefully followed the instructions several times but cannot view the final spreadsheet. IMA user support replied but only say to follow the instructions and link. Am frustrated since is one more hurdle to exam prep.

Has anyone else had similar problem and how did you resolve? Also am wondering why tool is only offered in Internet Explorer, not Firefox. Maybe need to contact Prometric since they administer the exam?.

Having a CMA title added on my CPA (Philippine) title gets me a lot of interviews. However interviewers with CIMA or ACCA often ask how many papers do I have to sit in to get certified. When I tell them it's 2, you cannot miss their surprised faces and condescending gestures as if discrediting CMA as they have more exams to pass. How should I respond to their simple but critical question?

I would like to invite you all to discuss all the benefits earned holding CMA certificate.

Its an open discussion, I hope CMA holders can join us and share with us their actual experience.

What are the main changes they experienced after gaining CMA designation in term of knowledge, change in salary or position and any other benefits?

What are the incentives to be a CMA holder? Does it meet their expectations?

In which fields you think CMA is most beneficial?

Do you think CMA qualification is well known in the world or we need more publicity?

AICPA, CIMA Joint Venture Would Offer New Management Accounting Designation

The AICPA and the London-based Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) are proposing forming a joint venture to develop and promote a new global management accounting designation. The joint venture is designed to give management accounting a higher profile in the United States, advance the science of management accounting worldwide, and promote the U.S. CPA designation as a worldwide standard of professional excellence in accounting, according to a press release from the organizations.

The AICPA, founded in 1887, is the world’s largest association representing the accounting profession, with nearly 370,000 members in 128 countries. CIMA, founded in 1919, is the world’s largest professional body of management accountants, with 183,000 members and students in 168 countries. The proposed joint venture would combine the strength of the AICPA in North America with CIMA’s footprint in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and elsewhere. Together, the organizations represent more than 550,000 members and students.

“This joint venture would help produce and recognize professionals around the world committed to excellence in management accounting, enterprise and performance strategy,” AICPA President and CEO Barry Melancon said in a press release.

“This agreement would give CIMA and AICPA truly global reach," said CIMA President George Glass. “The new venture would have an unrivaled depth of resources to meet the needs of both organizations and their individual members around the world.”

The pathways for obtaining the new credential would vary. Recognizing the significant educational and professional background of U.S. CPAs, AICPA voting members with at least three years working in management accounting or a financial management role would qualify for an accelerated route to obtaining the new designation. Non-voting AICPA members in the United States would not be eligible to obtain the credential.

CIMA Chief Executive Charles Tilley said: “Management accountants provide the expertise and information that enable organizations to make business-critical decisions. Professionals who earn the new designation will have achieved proficiency and leadership in management accounting.” The proposal will be vetted through the AICPA’s governance process. It has been reviewed by the AICPA Board of Directors, which approved advancing the proposal to the Institute’s regional Council meetings this month to gain input.

The initiative is subject to approval by the governing bodies of both organizations and will be voted on separately by the CIMA and AICPA councils in May, according to the press release. If approved, the joint venture would launch in 2012.

Under the terms of the proposed agreement, CIMA and the AICPA would create a nonprofit joint venture called the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants. The AICPA would own 60% of the entity; CIMA would own 40%; and the board of directors would be split evenly between the organizations, with CIMA and the AICPA rotating in the role of chairman.

Both the AICPA and CIMA would continue to exist as stand-alone membership organizations. The joint venture would authorize issuance of the designation on behalf of each membership organization. The joint venture is intended to become self-supporting within three years.

Approximately 45% of AICPA members practice in business, industry or government. The Institute’s Business and Industry Executive Committee has long supported some form of recognition to further underscore the unique competencies of CPAs working in business. The AICPA said it used a long-standing decision-tree model developed by the National Accreditation Commission to assess whether to build such a designation in-house. Based on the analysis, the preferred option was to form an accreditation alliance, and CIMA was identified as the most credible partner, given it is already recognized for issuing world-leading designations in management accounting. The proposal aims to fulfill AICPA strategic objectives related to serving the public interest through activities driven by a deep commitment to ongoing professional competency development and advancing the U.S. CPA worldwide.

“This joint venture is an important step in advancing our ongoing efforts to further enhance the worldwide awareness of the U.S. CPA,” Melancon said, “while creating a global value proposition for our members in business and industry.”
